CNY Hamper Labels and Shopfront Print: A Retailer's Plan
If you run a bakery, snack stall, dried goods shop or F&B outlet that sells Chinese New Year hampers to walk-in and online customers, this guide is for you — not the corporate buyer ordering branded calendars for clients (we cover that separately in our year-end corporate gifts guide). Hamper season is different: you're packing dozens or hundreds of boxes yourself, usually in the final two weeks before CNY, and the print order that should have gone out in October ends up rushed in December. Here's how to plan Chinese new year hamper packaging so the artwork is locked well before the queue gets long.
Start with the hamper label, not the box
Most shops buy a plain cardboard or wicker hamper base and build the "festive" look entirely with what goes on top of it. A red and gold label is the cheapest, fastest way to do that. We print cny hamper label sticker runs on self-adhesive stock in sizes from small tag labels to full-face box wraps, so the same base box can become three different-looking tiers just by swapping the label.
Keep the label artwork modular: one base design, with a swappable price or tier line (e.g. "Deluxe", "Prosperity", "Family Set") so you're not redesigning for every SKU. Spring red stickers also work as box seals across the opening flap, which gives hampers a tamper-evident edge customers notice even if they don't consciously register why it looks premium.
A sleeve turns a plain box into gift packaging
If your base packaging is a plain kraft or white box, a printed sleeve is the single upgrade that changes how the whole hamper reads. A wraparound sleeve over a plain box costs a fraction of a custom-printed box and can be reprinted every year with a new design, while the box itself stays a generic, cheaply restocked item.
This matters most for sellers moving hampers through F&B packaging — a sleeve hides mismatched box sizes from different suppliers and lets you standardise the gift look even when the boxes underneath aren't identical.
Wish cards close the gifting moment
A hamper being gifted, not kept, needs somewhere for the giver to write a greeting. A printed cny wish card tucked under the ribbon or slipped into a sleeve pocket does two things: it signals the hamper is gift-ready without the buyer needing their own card, and it carries your shop's name on a piece that sits on the recipient's table for days.
We usually suggest printing wish cards blank inside (for the buyer to write their own message) rather than pre-printed with generic greetings — buyers gifting hampers to bosses, clients or elderly relatives want the words to be their own, not a template's.
Tell the street your pre-order is open
None of the packaging matters if customers don't know pre-orders have started. CNY shop decoration doesn't need to be elaborate — a line of red bunting across your shopfront or counter, visible from the road or the mall corridor, does more to signal "festive stock is in" than a social media post most regulars won't see. Pair it with a simple chinese new year banner printing order stating the pre-order deadline and pickup dates, so walk-ins self-serve the information instead of asking staff who are busy packing orders.
Work backwards from your pre-order launch date
The single biggest cause of a December scramble is treating "print the labels" as a task instead of a schedule. Hamper sellers who avoid the rush generally work backwards from the day they plan to open pre-orders:
- 8–10 weeks before launch — finalise your hamper tiers and quantities per tier, since label and sleeve quantities depend on this.
- 6–7 weeks before launch — send artwork (or your supplier's product photos) for labels, sleeves and wish cards; confirm proofs before mass production starts.
- 4–5 weeks before launch — order shopfront bunting and banners so decoration is up on day one of pre-orders, not halfway through the period.
- 2–3 weeks before launch — print run completes; do a physical dry-run assembling one hamper of each tier to catch sizing issues (sleeve too tight, label overlapping a seam) while there's still time to reprint.
- Launch week — decoration goes up, labels and sleeves are on hand, and packing starts the moment the first pre-order confirms.
Most of our returning hamper clients now place this order in October for a CNY that falls in February — not because they're especially organised, but because they got burned once packing hampers at midnight with labels that arrived three days before the first delivery.
Where to start
If you already know roughly how many hampers you're packing this year, send us your tier count and target launch date and we'll work out label, sleeve, wish card and bunting quantities with you — plus a realistic production timeline instead of a guess.
