Business Cards That Get Kept: Materials, Finishes and Sizes That Work让人愿意留下的名片:真正有效的材质、加工与尺寸
Most business cards get read for three seconds and binned within a week. The ones that survive in a wallet or a rolodex have something in common, and it's rarely the logo. Doing business card printing in Malaysia for corporate and SME clients every week, we see the same pattern: the card that gets kept is the one that feels solid in the hand and looks intentional, not the one with the most information crammed on it. Here's what actually makes that difference — and what doesn't.
Paper weight and lamination: the part people underspend on
The single biggest factor in "does this feel cheap" is gsm (paper weight), not the printing quality. A 260gsm art card with matte lamination is our default recommendation for a reason: it's thick enough to not flex or bend in a pocket, and matte lamination kills fingerprints and glare that make a card look tired after one meeting. Gloss lamination is cheaper and fine for high-volume giveaways, but it scratches visibly and shows every smudge within days. If budget allows one upgrade, go to 300–310gsm before you spend on finishes — thickness reads as quality faster than any spot UV pattern does.
Sandwich cards and spot UV: when they're worth it
For founders, agents and anyone whose card doubles as a sales tool, we build up to 500–600gsm "sandwich" cards — two sheets of art card laminated back to back for a stiffness that genuinely stands out on a desk. Add spot UV over a logo or texture, or hot stamping in gold or silver foil, and the card starts doing marketing work on its own: people show it to colleagues. The catch is turnaround and minimum order quantity both go up, so this tier makes sense for directors and rainmakers, not for a 50-person sales team's daily reorder stock.
PVC business cards: plastic that survives longer than the job
A PVC business card costs more per piece than paper, but it doesn't bend, tear, get soggy in a wallet, or fade from body heat over months of carrying. We print these most often for real estate agents, insurance agents and anyone whose card lives in a client's wallet for years, not weeks — a frosted or matte PVC card with a QR code to a WhatsApp or portfolio link consistently outperforms paper for that use case. It's also the format that photographs and scans best for digital business card apps, which matters more each year as younger clients save contacts by camera rather than by hand.
Sizes that actually fit Malaysian and Singaporean wallets
Stick to standard sizes unless there's a real reason not to. Non-standard dimensions look creative in Canva and then don't fit card holders, wallet slots or the automated card scanners some procurement departments use.
- 90mm x 54mm — the Malaysia/Singapore standard. Use this unless a client specifically asks otherwise.
- 85mm x 55mm — the slightly narrower international/US size, occasionally requested by multinational clients matching a global template.
- Rounded corners — a small upgrade that reduces the fraying paper cards get at the corners after a few weeks of handling, and it's a common ask for PVC cards in particular.
- Vertical orientation — works well for personal brands and creatives, but check the client's existing letterhead and envelope layout for consistency before switching format.
Design decisions that outlast trends
Leave white space. A card crammed with every phone number, every social handle and a full address reads as trying too hard, and the one detail a prospect actually needs — the phone number or WhatsApp — gets lost in the noise. We tell clients to put the essentials only: name, role, one phone number, one email, a QR code if there's a portfolio or catalogue to point to. If your business card set is part of a larger stationery refresh, keep the paper stock, colour and logo treatment consistent with your letterhead and envelopes — a mismatched set undercuts the professionalism a good card is supposed to signal. And make sure your artwork file is built correctly before it reaches print; our guide on preparing print-ready artwork covers the bleed, resolution and colour mode issues that most often delay a reorder.
What we'd order, by role
Sales and account teams doing high-volume reorders: 260gsm matt lamination, standard 90x54mm, rounded corners optional. Directors and business development: 300–310gsm or a sandwich card with spot UV on the logo. Agents and consultants who hand out cards for years, not months: PVC, matte finish, QR code to WhatsApp. None of these need to be expensive — the difference between a card that gets kept and one that gets binned is usually a paper upgrade, not a redesign.
Order cards that get kept
Tell us your role, your reorder frequency and roughly how long each card needs to survive in someone's wallet, and we'll recommend the stock rather than upsell the most expensive one. Talk to us for a quote — reorders with artwork on file usually ship in 2–3 working days.
