Vouchers, Scratch Cards and Loyalty Printing: Promotions That Drive Repeat Sales

Most SMEs we print for already run some kind of promotion — a discount, a birthday gift, a "spend RM100 get RM10 off". The problem is rarely the idea. It's the paper behind it: a voucher without a control number, a scratch card anyone can peel and re-stick, a loyalty card that falls apart before the tenth stamp. Good voucher printing is what turns a one-time promotion into a reason for a customer to come back a second and third time. Here's how we specify it for clients who actually track redemption.

Vouchers: the workhorse of repeat business

A printed gift voucher does three jobs a digital coupon code struggles to match in Malaysia's F&B and retail scene: it's a physical object customers hand to someone else (gifting), it feels more "real" so redemption rates are higher than emailed codes, and it's harder to screenshot-share to strangers if you print it right. The details that matter:

  • Sequential numbering — every voucher gets a unique number so your staff can log redemptions and you can spot duplicates or counterfeits. We print this as part of the job, not as a rubber stamp added later.
  • Expiry date printed, not stamped — a printed expiry is harder to alter and looks more professional than a rubber-stamped one.
  • Carbonless duplicate option — for vouchers redeemed in-store, a two-part NCR set lets the cashier keep a stub and the customer keep the other half, which closes the loop on "did this actually get redeemed?"
  • Card stock, not paper — 250–300gsm art card survives a wallet or a drawer for months; 80gsm paper doesn't.

Scratch cards: built-in game mechanics

Scratch cards work because they add a moment of small suspense to a purchase — "did I win?" — which is a stronger trigger for social sharing and repeat visits than a flat percentage-off coupon. We print them for grand openings, anniversary sales and F&B chains running "every purchase, a chance to win" promotions. Two things decide whether a scratch card campaign works or turns into a liability:

  • The scratch-off ink layer — a genuine silver latex scratch panel that can't be seen through under normal light or a phone flashlight. Cheap alternatives that show the prize underneath (or scratch off if handled roughly in a hot, humid warehouse) will get called out on social media fast.
  • Prize distribution control — decide your prize ratio and odds before print, and if the print run needs to match an exact distribution (e.g. only 50 "win RM20" cards in a run of 5,000), tell your printer up front so the layout accounts for randomised placement, not a predictable pattern that customers can crack by trial and error.

Loyalty cards and hand tags: the quiet repeat-sale drivers

A stamp card is the cheapest customer retention tool most SMEs never bother printing properly. If it's flimsy paper, it gets thrown away before the fifth stamp — the exact point where the customer would start feeling invested. We recommend 300gsm card with lamination (matte, so it takes a stamp or hole-punch cleanly) and a clear "reward at stamp 10" design that's legible at a glance, not buried in fine print.

Hand tags deserve a mention here too — they're not a voucher, but they carry the same "physical object that reminds the customer of your brand" logic. A well-printed hand tag on a retail product with a QR code linking to a loyalty sign-up or a repeat-purchase discount does double duty: packaging and marketing in one card.

Stopping leakage before it starts

The most common complaint we hear isn't "the vouchers looked bad" — it's "we printed 500 vouchers and can't tell how many were actually redeemed, or whether staff quietly let expired ones through." Three habits fix this without extra software:

  1. Sequential numbers on every voucher and scratch card, logged against a simple spreadsheet at redemption.
  2. A visible expiry date and a written staff instruction: "no redemption without checking the number against the log."
  3. A QR code on the voucher linking to a WhatsApp or Google Form check-in, if you want digital tracking without building an app.

If you're combining this with a wider promotion — a TikTok Live giveaway, a Meta ads discount campaign — printed vouchers and scratch cards are the physical half of a loop we build the digital half for too; see our guide on WhatsApp Business marketing for how to route redemptions straight into a customer list you can remarket to.

Where to start

Tell us your promotion goal — gifting, in-store redemption, a scratch-and-win campaign, or a loyalty programme — and we'll recommend the format, stock and print security features that fit your budget and your prize structure. Talk to us before you finalise quantities; the printing details are cheaper to fix before the run than after.
